I Corinthians 13 Amplified
This devotion was written by Gretchen Ordelheide, a member of our Ministry Prayer Team.
I Corinthians 13:4-8a (NIV)
(4) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. (5) It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (6) Love does not delight in evil but rejoices wit the truth. (7) It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (8a) Love never fails.Amplified version of I Corinthians 13:4-8a
(4) Love allows others to go first and take their time, while it joyfully waits. Love allows God to be God – waiting on Him to act and move – realizing that I am not God and cannot (and will not) see the entire picture while here on earth. Love trusts that God has everything under control and will take care of tings in His perfect timing. Love puts the needs of others first. It listens to others with patience and compassion, even when disinterested in the topic, short on time or overwhelmed by many spinning plates. Love shows itself to others with random acts, not expecting anything in return. Love doesn’t dwell on switching possessions or circumstances with another. Love doesn’t brag about accomplishments, victories, abilities, circumstances, gifts or possessions. Love doesn’t look down its nose at others – not internally, externally or consciously.
(5) Love is not unkind toward others. It doesn’t push to the head o the line, talk down to others or become so busy that it neglects others and their needs. Love doesn’t speak unkindly to others whether verbally or by negative body language. Love’s focus is not on its own needs but, rather, on the needs and feelings of others. It doesn’t look for its own gain but, instead, lifts up and encourages others. Love is not offended by others, but looks for, expects and anticipates the best from healthy friends and family. And from the unhealthy, love understands that these people are ravaged by the Enemy and need God’s love, and our prayers, all the more! Love is not reactive but, instead, responds with empathy and compassion. Love looks to the Father first, to see what He’s doing, and then follows suit. Love doesn’t regularly review a laundry list of other’s bad behavior. Love throws the list away and forgives. Love realizes that harboring anger and unforgiveness only hurts itself and is a waist of time.
(6) Love is ecstatic about, and thrives on, the testimony of Jesus and His goodness. Love doesn’t dwell on the darts thrown by the Enemy, but, instead, looks for God’s goodness and miracles, and praises Him for Who He is!
(7) Love always guards the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual well being of others. Love takes care of others – their needs. Love puts its hope in God alone, believing He is good and for me. Love knows that God is always present and is so incredibly faithful. Love looks to God for discernment, knowing it can’t rely on its own thoughts and feelings. Love never stops believing in God’s ability to act and move supernaturally. Love is never defeated by the Enemy but always lives victoriously in Christ Jesus, knowing that He has already won the ultimate battle. Love rejoices in the fact that all things are possible through the supernatural powerful of Christ Jesus.
(8a) Love doesn’t give up. It is always successful. It wins every time. No matter what our circumstances might seem to say, we are victorious winners through Christ Jesus, because of God’s amazing and powerful love for mankind.
